Catalyst Construction is proud to announce its participation in constructing the Moss Universal Park, a groundbreaking project aimed at creating a universally inclusive park that goes beyond the playground and brings access from the forest to the baseball field, an all-inclusive playground to picnic areas, restrooms to sensory rooms. Every activity in Moss Universal Park is designed to be fully inclusive for families and individuals impacted by disabilities. But this park goes beyond that—it will intentionally be built for ‘everyBODY’, ensuring universal community access, so ‘noBODY’ feels left out. Scheduled to break ground in Spring 2025 and open by Fall 2025, in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, this park is set to redefine the standards for accessibility and inclusivity in recreational spaces across the country.

With the support of Catalyst Construction, which has played a crucial role in the planning process, Moss Universal Park will become the first universal park in the United States, aiming to serve as a model for future parks. Despite the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) being in place for 34 years, there has yet to be a truly inclusive park. Moss Universal Park seeks to fill this gap, catering to all ages and abilities, from children to seniors. Partnering with GameTime, a leader in playground design and equipment, this collaboration is poised to set a new standard for inclusivity and accessibility in park development.

The vision behind Moss Universal Park comes from the founder of The Ability Center, Damian Buchman, a remarkable individual and two-time childhood cancer survivor. Drawing from his personal experiences, Damian is dedicated to building a park where children with disabilities and their parents, and even grandparents can play together. His goal extends beyond the playground, aiming to provide a space that truly includes everyone.

Damian and Moss Universal Park’s journey have been bolstered by significant partnerships and community support. Connected with Catalyst Construction through its founder, Matt Burow, Damian has received crucial support in building credibility and generating buzz for the project. This local story, combined with Catalyst’s positive reputation, is attracting considerable attention.

However, funding and awareness remain challenging. Unlike more well-known organizations, Moss Universal Park relies on independently generated support and visibility. This involves educating the public on the distinctions between ADA compliance and true inclusivity. As Damian emphasizes, “ADA is access, and access is not an opportunity.” Understanding and implementing access, inclusion, and universal design are critical to achieving his vision.

A standout feature of Moss Universal Park is its dedication to mental health and sensory needs. The park will include quiet areas in the forest, sensory rooms, and bathrooms with adult-size changing tables, ensuring fully accessible facilities. The goal is for visitors to leave the park not out of boredom, but because they’ve had a fulfilling and engaging day.

Moss Universal Park is more than just a playground; it is a vision for the future of inclusive recreational spaces. With Damian Buchman’s leadership and the support of partners like Catalyst Construction, this project promises to set a new standard for accessibility and inclusivity, benefiting many generations to come.
