Expanding the Mission, One Classroom at a Time with Catalyst Construction

Arizona Lutheran Academy

When I reflect on where Arizona Lutheran Academy has been and where God is leading us, I can’t help but feel both humbled and grateful.

Arizona Lutheran Academy was established in 1978, and for the past decade and a half, we’ve faithfully served about 180 students in grades 9–12. But shortly after the pandemic, we began to see something change. Enrollment climbed to over 230 students in 2023, the highest in our school’s history. It was an incredible blessing, but it was also a challenge.

We were running out of space. Fast.

We had already said no to six families, six families who didn’t have another Christ-centered high school option in our community. As a ministry, we never want space limitations to determine whether a family can access Christian education. We knew something had to change.

A Bold Vision and Real Obstacles

Phase 1 of our expansion was ambitious:

  • Five new classrooms
  • A large gymnasium
  • Our first major building project since 1986

This wasn’t just about square footage. It was about mission growth.

But the reality was daunting. We were up against time. We needed classrooms quickly. We hadn’t run a major capital campaign in years. We wrestled with financing, fundraising, permitting, architectural coordination, and county approvals, all while continuing to serve students and families every day. There were many moments when we felt like key pieces were out of our control.

When we put the project out to bid, three construction firms presented proposals. We approached the decision with careful consideration and a healthy degree of caution, recognizing the significance of the investment and the long-term impact it would have on our ministry. This was not a decision we could afford to get wrong. When Catalyst came to the table, their approach immediately distinguished them from the others.

Why Catalyst Was Different

It became a no-brainer. What Catalyst offered extended well beyond construction services. They provided a comprehensive, integrated approach that addressed each of our key concerns, from design, budgeting, and scheduling to coordination and strategic guidance. Perhaps most unexpectedly, they also supported us in refining and communicating our story in a way that resonated with our community and supporters.

We were aware of Catalyst’s strong reputation, particularly through their work with other ministries in the Midwest. However, reputation alone is not enough to sustain a project of this magnitude.

Once our partnership began, their relational approach quickly distinguished them. Catalyst engaged with us not simply as a client, but as a ministry partner. From the outset, they walked alongside us through every phase of the process, not only in design and construction but also in financial modeling, timeline planning, and preparing us to present the vision to donors and stakeholders with confidence.

From Fear to Confidence

Before the project began, there were real concerns regarding financing, potential delays, and whether we truly had the capacity to see something of this scale through to completion. But as our partnership with Catalyst developed, that uncertainty steadily gave way to confidence.

Catalyst didn’t simply construct a facility. They helped establish trust in the process, clarity in the path forward, and momentum that carried us through each phase of the project. Because of their partnership, the project is complete and we now have the capacity to serve 320 students! We occupied those new classrooms in October 2025. And most importantly, we will be able to say “yes” to more families from our churches, our schools, and our broader community. That has always been the heart of this effort.

Looking Ahead to Phase 2

We trust that God will continue to bring families to Arizona Lutheran Academy. When enrollment surpasses 300 students, additional facilities will be necessary to support that growth. As we begin planning for Phase 2, there is naturally some uncertainty. But it feels very different than it did before. It is no longer rooted in concern. It is rooted in anticipation.

We move forward with confidence because we know we will not be navigating the process alone. Catalyst has been with us every step of the way, and we trust they will continue to serve as true partners in ministry, not simply contractors, but trusted advisors and collaborators.

A Recommendation for Other Ministries

If you are a ministry leader considering expansion, I strongly encourage you to invite Catalyst to the table. Allow them to bid on your project. Ask thoughtful, thorough questions. Engage them in conversations about your mission and your vision. Collaborate with them on fundraising strategies and financing options. Our experience has shown that you will find more than a construction firm, you will find a committed partner.

For us, this partnership has meant far more than new classrooms. It has brought confidence in the process, clarity in our mission, and the ability to say “yes” to more families seeking Christ-centered education. And that has made all the difference.
