As I reflect on my journey with Wisconsin Lutheran College (WLC) over the past 16 years, one significant partnership stands out: our collaboration with Catalyst Construction. This relationship not only transformed our campus but also reinforced the principles of trust, stewardship, and innovation that are vital to our mission of preparing Christian leaders.
The Beginning of a Partnership
When I began my tenure as President in 2008, WLC was a smaller institution with 600 students. Today, we are blessed with a record enrollment of approximately 1,100 students, thanks in part to the strategic growth initiatives and building projects we’ve undertaken with Catalyst. My initial encounter with Catalyst founder, Matt Burow, was serendipitous. His mother was a beloved professor in our education department at the time and Matt, recognizing his connection with WLC, introduced himself to me, and I immediately saw in Matt a kindred spirit—a young, driven, and creative leader.
Building Trust and Vision
Our first major project together was the outdoor athletic complex. At that time, Matt’s company was still in its early stages, and choosing them over more established firms was a leap of faith. Despite skepticism from some of my colleagues, Matt’s dedication and vision were evident. The project was a success, completed on time and within budget, which solidified my trust in Matt and Catalyst.
Trust is built over time and through consistent delivery. Matt’s approach to problem-solving and his unwavering commitment to our projects have been instrumental. He became not just a contractor but a valued member of our community, even serving on our board. His strategic insights and genuine care for our institution have been invaluable.
Innovative Solutions in Challenging Times
One of our significant challenges was accommodating our growing student body. We needed more residence hall space but were constrained financially. Catalyst proposed an innovative solution: demolishing old apartments and constructing a new residence hall through a creative investor model. This involved creating a separate LLC, allowing us to fund the project without burdening the college’s finances. The result is a top-rated residence hall that significantly enhances our students’ campus experience.
This kind of creativity is a hallmark of Catalyst’s approach. Whether it was transforming unused parking space into state-of-the-art academic labs and a sports performance center, Matt’s solutions have consistently aligned with our needs and resources.
Overcoming Challenges Together
Every construction project comes with its own set of challenges. From zoning issues to managing subcontractors, the journey is rarely smooth. Catalyst’s commitment to partnership means they are with us every step of the way. For example, rezoning for our new parking structure in Wauwatosa was a complex and contentious process. Catalyst’s collaboration with our architectural firm, HGA, and their understanding of community concerns were crucial in navigating these hurdles.
Stewardship and Integrity
In the realm of higher education and non-profit organizations, stewardship of resources is paramount. Our donors expect every dollar to be used wisely and effectively. Catalyst’s track record of completing projects on time and within budget has been reassuring. Their model of working in cost-effective ways has also enabled us to maximize our investments.
The Catalyst Difference
What sets Catalyst apart is their commitment to building more than just structures. They build relationships and communities. Matt’s involvement goes beyond professional obligations—he is a philanthropist who believes in our mission. This alignment of values has fostered a deep, trusting relationship.
Catalyst’s involvement in projects like our track and gym renovations, which now bear their name, exemplifies their lasting impact. Hundreds of thousands of visitors see the Catalyst name, a testament to their dedication and support for our college.
A Model for Success
For other institutions and churches considering a construction partner, my advice is simple: look for a partner, not just a contractor. Catalyst Construction embodies this philosophy. Their focus on stewardship, community engagement, and innovative problem-solving makes them an invaluable ally.
Our partnership with Catalyst Construction has been a cornerstone of WLC’s growth and success for the past 16 years. Matt and his team have not only built our recent campus enhancements but also helped build our community. As we look to the future, I am confident that this collaboration will continue to yield remarkable results, driven by a shared vision and commitment to excellence.
