When the Benedictine Sisters of Mother of God Monastery in Watertown, South Dakota, looked at their aging community and dwindling numbers, they faced a heartbreaking reality.
The mission they had carried forward since 1899 might not survive the next chapter.
But instead of letting that legacy fade, they made a courageous decision.
They chose transformation.
At this year’s LeadingAge Wisconsin Conference, Catalyst Construction is honored to share the inspiring story of how these bold, faith-filled women reimagined their ministry and how Catalyst walked alongside them to bring their vision to life.

Rooted in Faith, Ready for Change
The Sisters’ story began in 1899 with just $20 and a commitment to serve when they opened a hospital on the prairie. This steadfast group of educators had no prior healthcare experience, but they shared a desire to meet the urgent needs of a growing community.
Over the decades, their ministry evolved, constantly adapting to what was most needed.
By 2017, however, they faced a different kind of challenge: how to continue their mission with fewer members and increasing care needs within their own community.
Instead of retreating, they paused to reflect.
They asked hard questions, assessed their assets, and clarified what truly mattered most.
A Vision That Served More Than Themselves
What emerged from that discernment was a bold and generous idea: to use their land and resources not only for their own needs but also as a gift to the broader community.
Their dream? A multi-generational, life-giving campus.
They envisioned senior living, childcare, intergenerational learning, affordable housing, and shared spaces where people could connect, heal, and grow.
They called it The Village of Harmony Hill.

Catalyst’s Role: Bringing Vision Down to Earth
Catalyst joined their journey in 2021, guiding the Sisters through pre-construction planning, design development, and the complexities of building during a pandemic and global supply chain crisis. Together, we:
- Clarified the big-picture vision
- Aligned designs with both spiritual values and financial realities
- Built with flexibility, knowing congregations and community needs evolve over time
Every decision was made with mission in mind, from the layout of shared spaces to the materials chosen for long-term stewardship.
From Dream to Dedication
In May 2023, the Sisters moved into their new home. Within weeks, Harmony Hill was 90% occupied.
Children’s laughter filled the childcare center.
Neighbors gathered in the community Commons.
And the Sisters’ legacy, once in question, was alive and thriving.
Harmony Hill stands today as living proof of what’s possible when faith, courage, and practical partnership come together.
